I went to a coffee shop today and ordered a cappuccino. The girl who served me placed a small silver packet on the saucer, next to the spoon. It contained two sticks of chewing gum.
When I lived in the UK I don’t remember getting anything free with my coffee. Then I went to live in the Netherlands and every time I bought a cup of coffee it came with a small biscuit. More often than not a speculaas cookie.
It’s normal to get a cookie with your coffee in a lot of other European countries as well, though the big international chains like Starbucks and Costa don’t play ball with local traditions.
This is the first time I’ve ever got chewing gum with my coffee. I don’t know if it’s common practice to do this in Macedonia or just the way that particular establishment does things. I’ll have to start drinking more coffee when I’m out and about and see if If I get chewing gum with it anywhere else.
