EuroMillions Tickets Appear to Be Popular with Portuguese Lottery Players

Dear Travel Diary

Dear Travel Diary,

I’m not a millionaire. I just checked my EuroMillions ticket and I haven’t won this week—again. When I lived in the Netherlands, I used to buy a Dutch Lotto ticket every week, but it wasn’t possible to buy a EuroMillions ticket. It was possible to play EuroMillions in Spain though. Lottery tickets are very popular in Spain. There’s a ridiculous amount of options available. You can even buy lottery tickets from street vendors. The lottery seems to be pretty popular here in Portugal as well. On Tuesday there was a long queue of people buying Euromillions tickets and scratch cards.

A Euromillions ticket costs €2.30 in Portugal and, when you buy the ticket, they usually charge you an extra 30 cents for a M1lhão ticket.

M1lhão (The Million) is a supplementary game offered to EuroMillions players in Portugal. The M1lhão draw takes place every Friday evening. Unlike most lottery-type draws, the M1lhão code consists of a combination of letters and numbers. First three letters and then five numbers. If your ticket is an exact match you win €1 million. M1lhão winners never need to share the pot because each code is only allocated once.
