Viaducto Mondéjar (Mondejar Viaduct) is situated on the outskirts of the town [MAP], not far from the Lavadero del Pilar. It’s an interesting spot to visit and is considered a gateway to the town.
The large and impressive stone construction is the largest of several viaducts built in the early 1900s to support trains travelling between Mondéjar and Orusco via Ambite.
The stone used for constructing the viaduct actually came from Ambite but it was cut and shaped by craftsmen in Mondéjar. The line opened on March 23, 1916.
The trains stopped running a long time ago and the tracks are gone. Mondejar Viaduct and the rest of the line have been transformed into a green lane road that allows pedestrians and cyclists to enjoy some stunning views. It’s called the Vía Verde del Tajuña – La Alcarria.
